London: MS Dhoni became the fourth Indian to reach the milestone of 10,000 runs in ODIs during the second match of the three-game series against England here, Saturday.
The 37-year-old former India skipper joined an elite list which features some of India’s greatest batsmen in Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid.
Dhoni needed just 33 runs to achieve the milestone and he did it with a single in the 43rd over of the at the iconic Lord’s Stadium. Dhoni is currently placed 12th in the list of all-time highest run-getters in ODIs.
Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara is the only wicketkeeper-batsman to feature in the list with 14,234 runs to his name. He is the second highest run-getter in the ODIs, behind only the legendary Tendulkar.
Earlier in the day, Dhoni also became the fourth wicket-keeper to complete 300 ODI catches after Adam Gilchrist (417), Mark Boucher (403) and Kumar Sangakkara (402).
However, India lost the match by 86 runs after being set a target of 323. The visitors were bowled out for 236 in the final ball of their innings. As a result, the series is now level at 1-1 with the decider is set to be played next Tuesday at Leeds.
Suresh Raina (46), skipper Virat Kohli (45), Dhoni (37) and Shikhar Dhawan (36) got good starts but failed to convert those into match-winning scores. Liam Plunkett (4/46) was the pick of the English bowlers.
Earlier, a fluent century by Joe Root (113) and twin half centuries by skipper Eoin Morgan (53) and all-rounder David Willey (50 n o) helped the hosts put up a massive 322/7 in their 50 overs, after winning the toss and electing to bat first. Kuldeep Yadav (3/68) was the most successful bowler among the Indians.
