Nabarangpur: Authorities launched an inquiry after allegations surfaced that officials from neighbouring Chhattisgarh entered Odisha territory and excavated a road connecting the two states, triggering fresh concerns over a possible border dispute similar to the long-running Kotia issue.
The alleged incident occurred in Majhidhanua panchayat under Kosagumuda block in Nabarangpur district, which shares a border with Bakawand block in Chhattisgarh. Majhidhanua Sarpanch Dayaram Pujari alleged that Chhattisgarh officials used an excavator to dig up the road inside Odisha territory without taking prior permission or informing the state administration.
He claimed the road had served for years as a vital link for residents of both states, facilitating farming, trade and daily travel. The excavation has disrupted movement in the border area, causing inconvenience to local residents.
The reason for digging the road has not yet been established, prompting demands for a high-level inquiry and immediate restoration of the route. The incident has raised concerns among residents about the possibility of a border dispute similar to the one involving the Kotia cluster of villages.
Sub-Collector Prakash Kumar Mishra said the Kodinga tehsildar had been directed to investigate the matter and that appropriate action would be taken after the inquiry report is received. Kosagumuda Block Development Officer (BDO) Ashish Tripathy said it was not yet clear who had excavated the road. He said officials were unable to confirm whether those responsible were from Odisha or Chhattisgarh and that the police and the tehsildar were conducting a joint inquiry.
He added that no formal complaint had been lodged by the sarpanch or any other individual so far, but the panchayat would be requested to restore the damaged road to re-establish connectivity.
Kodinga Tehsildar Tula Muduli, who visited the site, said the excavation had taken place within Odisha territory. He said no one could be allowed to disrupt public connectivity through unilateral action and that legal action would be taken against those found responsible after the police investigation is completed.
