Cuttack, Dec 7: A critically injured patient from Kendrapara was left writhing in pain as doctors at SCB Medical College and Hospital refused to operate upon the severed wrist of his right hand Sunday.
Manoranjan Rout (35), a resident of Shankarpur under Derabish police limits in Kendrapara district, was attacked by a person over past enmity. His right wrist was severed in the attack.
Doctors from all departments rushed to check on but nobody was willing to operate upon the patient. Doctors from surgery, plastic surgery and hand surgery were called to the Casualty ward. They held discussions among themselves before refusing to operate, said sources.
The doctors cited lack of equipment as the reason for not operating upon the patient.
Hospital superintendent Pratap Rath claimed the machine is available in the hospital, but a doctor from the plastic surgery department said that was not the case.
Rout was attacked at 8 am Sunday, and he was admitted to SCB at 12 pm. When medical help looked unlikely even after 2.30 pm, he was shifted to a private hospital.
Meanwhile, difference of opinion between the SCB superintendent and other doctors over availability of equipment has invited criticism from all and sundry.
When asked, Rath said the machine required to operate upon the patient was very much available, and said the doctors’ refusal to operate on the patient showed they were not dedicated towards their duty.
