Bhadrak, Nov 7: A domestic help who was living at a doctor’s home here for over two decades suddenly lost his bearings and brutally assaulted the doctor’s minor son with a grinding stone leaving him critically injured in the wee hours of Saturday. The servant later committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan.
Identified as Suresh Nayak, the domestic help was a native of Bangiriposi area of Mayurbhanj district and was under the employment of Dr Prabhas Mohanty, owner of Salandi Nursing Home, for the last 21 years.
At midnight Friday, after the family went to sleep, Nayak barged into the room of Mohanty’s son Abinash (aged 16) armed with a grinding stone and locked it from inside. Nayak then proceeded to repeatedly ram Abinash’s head with the grinding stone, leaving the minor boy unconscious and bleeding profusely. Presuming the boy to be dead, Nayak tied a piece of cloth to his neck and hanged himself from the ceiling fan.
Abinash’s younger brother Abhilash (10) was also in the room all this while. Terrified at the violent outburst of the domestic help who he and his elder brother had known all their lives, Abhilash began screaming for help through the open window.
A security guard posted outside the house heard Abhilash’s cries and immediately phoned Mohanty, who rushed to the room. Abhilash managed to open it from the inside after which Abinash was rescued and taken for medical care.
Police rushed to the spot and recorded the statements of the two brothers.
However, police were unable to ascertain the reason behind the domestic help’s grisly attack and his suicide. Sources said the police as well as the doctor’s family are stunned as to why a long-serving domestic help attacked Abinash in such a manner.
The doctor said Nayak was entrusted with several responsibilities at the nursing home for the last 21 years and said that he was distressed at the sudden turn of events.
Meanwhile, a brother of the deceased claimed that Nayak was unwell and had asked for an ultrasound test to be done on him to which the doctor allegedly refused.
Nayak’s body was recovered by Town police in the presence of the additional tehsildar.
