Cuttack, April 7: Khurda eves edged out Cuttack 3-2 in a closely fought final at the Barabati Stadium here Tuesday to win the Nalco Cup State Hockey Championship for women.
In an encounter where fortunes fluctuated like a pendulum, Khurda took the lead when Suravi Pradhan scored a brilliant field goal. She doubled the lead for Khurda in the 13th minute converting a penalty corner with a powerful hit.
Down by two goals, the spectators thought that the Cuttack eves were down and out. But they fought back with tremendous guts. They kept pressing for a goal and in the 27th minute Rosni Lakra latched onto a pass and slotted home her team’s first goal.
However, after the change of ends, Khurda again restored their two goal cushion when Birajini Ekka coverted a penalty corner for them in the 38th minute.
Cuttack tried to come back in the game when Nil Projita Majhi scored in the 50th minute but that wasn’t enough in the end.
