Bhubaneswar, July 28: Top seed Rakesh Kumar Nayak of Orissa emerged sole leader with five points in his kitty after the completion of the fifth round of the Ist Macaulay All India Fide Rating Chess Championships here Thursday.
Anirban Basu of West Bengal is in the second spot with 4.5 points. Ten players are closely following him with four points each. Among them are seven Orissa players, Rajesh Nayak, Maheshwar Mishra, Mohammad Ashraf, Rajat Kumar Sahoo, Manish Kumar, Binayak Rath and Sanjeban Nayak. Outstation players in third spot are Sawyan Baran De, Sarbojit Paul and Anurag Jaiswal from West Bengal.
In his fifth round match Rakesh got the better of his elder brother Rajesh, Ashraf prevailed over statemate Soumya Ranjan Sahoo, while Binayak made mincemeat of Santosh Raj Panda. In other matches Maheswar checkmated Hrushikesh Rath and Rajat registered an emphatic victory over Avinash Baliarsingh.
Orissa girls triumph
Orissa girls’ emerged champions in the Sub-junior National Sepak Takraw Championships, which concluded at Hyderabad, Thursday. Meanwhile, the boys’ side finished runners-up in the tournament. The girls blanked Tamil Nadu 2-0 while the boys were edged out 1-2 by Delhi in their respective finals.
