Bhubaneswar, April 22: Orissa players crowned themselves with glory by winning the boys’ and girls’ under-16 title in the CS7 Tennis Championship series which concluded Friday in the Kolkata.
Kabir Hans of Orissa bagged a double by winning both the boys’ singles and doubles title. In the girls’ singles, it was the turn of Rutuparna Chaudhury to emerge champion.
Kabir won the boys’ singles title with a 6-1, 6-3 demolition of Assam’s Rishav Brahma. Kabir was always the much superior player and did not give his rival any chance in both the sets. After his singles exploits, Kabir teamed up with Anurag Agarwal to win the doubles title. In the final they defeated Dhananjoy Govind and Ch Shree Harsheet 6-2, 6-4.
In the under singles girls’ singles final, Rutuparna emerged an easy 6-0, 6-1 winner against Roopkatha Mukherjee of West Bengal. The Orissa girl could have easily achieved the double bagel, but probably relaxed seeing the plight of her opponent.
The win fetched Rutuparna 25 points and it will certainly help her improve on her current national U-16 ranking of 33.
Incidentally both Rutuparna and Kabir are students of the Farhan Ali Tennis Academy, which has been churning out good players making a mark at the national level since last year. Farhan’s effort also has to be lauded as he is running the camp on his own without the backing of sponsors.
