Bhubaneswar: Rash and drink driving coupled with faulty road design claimed three lives in the city Saturday night.
The three youths died after their car rammed into a truck from behind near Satsang Vihar.
The deceased were identified as Anuttam Harichandan of Palasuni, Kumar Chandan of Prachi Vihar in Rasulgarh area under the Mancheswar police station limits and Debasis Mishra of Baramunda under Khandagiri police station limits.
Harichandan and Chandan had recently married while Debashis was scheduled to tie the knot after two months. Chandan was a merchant navy officer and Debashis was a bank employee while Harichand was a software engineer.
The mishap took place when the three were on their way to Rasulgarh from Jaydev Vihar.
Sources alleged the trio, who were in an inebriated state, had failed to spot the stationary truck. Debashis was at the wheel.
The impact of the crash was so great that the front portion of the car was completely damaged and the vehicle also caught fire in which one of the deceased sustained severe burn injuries.
Two of them died on the spot while the other succumbed on the way to hospital. Satsang Vihar area, where there are two diversion roads and the flyover starts on the National Highway 16, has turned into a death trap for travelers. The area was recently tagged as highly accident-prone by the Road and Transport department. It is among 13 other such spots in the city.
Inspector in-charge of the Sahid Nagar police station, Padmanav Pradhan, said the spot was marked as accident-prone due to faulty road designing adding that National Highway authorities and engineers of the works department had been apprised of the need for rectification in design.
