Bhubaneswar, March 21: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been asked to put up dustbins in the peripheral area of the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) by March 30 to maintain cleanliness and minimise chances of birds getting attracted by waste.
During an airport environment management committee (AEMC) meeting Friday chaired by Chief Secretary GC Pati, BMC was directed to regularly clean waste generated by meat vendors near the airport in order to prevent bird hits. The civic body has also been tasked with the job of relocating illegal meat shops thriving in the airport vicinity. The shops attract birds in large numbers, posing a threat to flight safety.
At the last AEMC meeting held February 10, Pati asked AAI and BMC to ensure pruning of trees and lifting of waste generated by open meat shops.Police commissioner RP Sharma who attended the meeting was asked to make Gandamunda area a no-cracker zone as people organising marriage ceremonies in the area burst crackers near the runway posing a threat to aviation.
