Dutee, Amiya sprint to glory

Srabani, Purnima bag silver medals

Bhubaneswar: Orissa ace sprinters Dutee Chand and Amiya Kumar Mallick secured gold medals in their respective 100m events of the 21st Federation Cup National Athletic Championship that concluded Sunday at Patiala.

On the concluding day of the four-day event, state sprint queens Dutee and Srabani Nanda bagged gold and silver respectively in the women’s 100m event. Dutee clocked 11.48 seconds while Srabani clocked 11.57 seconds. Merlin Joseph of Kerala secured bronze medal with a timing of 11.68 seconds.

In the men’s 100m, Amiya again proved himself to be the  fastest man of the country clocking 10.51 seconds. Jyotisankar Debnath of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala’s Anuroop John bagged silver and bronze medals with timings of 10.57 and 10.60 seconds respectively.

Meanwhile another Orissa athlete Purnima Hembram secured silver in the heptathlon event with 5632 points where as West Bengal girl Swapna Burman secured bagged gold with 5897 points. Kerala’s Liksy Joseph secured bronze with 5476 points.

Orissa athletes bagged a total of eight medals including four golds and an identical number of silver medals, in the Championships.

Ansuman takes sole lead

Ansuman Samal of Cuttack is leading the table after the completion of the fifth round of the Orissa State U-25 Chess Championship, organised by the Khurda District Chess Association at the Swami Vivekananda Institute in Pokariput here, Sunday.

Ansuman outplayed Baivab Mishra in the fifth round and maintained his all-win record in the meet, having five points in his kitty. Baivab meanwhile has four points in his bag and is sharing the joint third position with nine others.

Khurda boys Biswajit Nayak and Biswanath Samantaray are in tied second position with 4.5 points each in their kitty. Both the players signed peace among themselves.

Girija knock prop TC

Girija Mishra (67) hit a brilliant half century to help Town Club (TC) score 257 for the loss of nine wickets against Greens Academy on the first day of the two-day match at the Town Club Ground here Sunday.

Bhabatosh Paramanik (33), Rakesh Behera (28), Binayak Mohanty (28) and Sushil Barik (20) all got starts, but could not capitallise. Nadeem Khan (2/48), Deepak Hembram (2/35) and Ritwik Jena (2/64) picked up two wickets each for Greens Academy.
