Bhubaneswar: Ace sprinter Dutee Chand has expressed her interest to enter the political fray after finishing her athletic career. The fastest Indian women with the national record to her name in the 100 metres is keen to do work for the people and this she believes will only happen through politics.
“I have always wanted to join politics since childhood. My family has also been involved in grassroots politics, with my mother being the Sarpanch of our village,” Dutee Chand tweeted Monday.
Dutee, however, said there is no plan to join politics as of now and she will wait till the completion of her career as an athlete. “Now, I am focusing on my sprinting career. There is no plan to join politics now. Both are full time jobs… you can’t do both things together at the same time,” said the Odisha sprinter.
The 23-year-old athlete, who holds the national record in the women’s 100 metres event, is preparing for the World Championships scheduled to begin September 27 in Doha. The sprinter, even though she did not manage to clock the qualification time has been specially invited by the IAAF to participate in the Athletics Worlds. Hence Dutee is busy preparing for the event and will leave for the Qatar capital in the next few days.
