Bhubaneswar: In order to bring transparency and introduce online monitoring of jail inmates, the state government has proposed an e-prison system in the state.
“We have planned to introduce e-prison system in the state. We have urged the Centre to sanction fund for the project,” home (special) secretary Lalit Das told Orissa POST, Friday.
When asked about the timeline for implementation of the online system, he said, “After the approval of funds, the project will be implemented.”
All the 91 jails in the state will be computerised and ‘visitor-management’ system introduced as per the system. Details of jail inmates, their case history along with address will be uploaded online and the inmates will be monitored accordingly, sources said.
After implementation, the relatives of the accused can seek appointment to meet them online. Family members of the accused and convicts under this system can request for online appointment even through their smart phones. As per the e-prison system, biometric fingerprint of prisoners will be taken during entry and exit.
Under the new system, criminal records of a prisoner, health information and treatment details will be uploaded on the related website. Similarly, whether a prisoner was granted conditional bail or has gone on parole will be mentioned online.
National Informatics Centre (NIC) has been executing e-prison system for the entire country. NIC’s e-prison software system has 11 application modules out of which work on three is underway on priority basis in the state. The three modules include prison management system, visitor management system and hospital management system, sources added.
