Bhubaneswar: NGOs and civil groups of Bhubaneswar will observe Earth Hour March 19 by switching off lights in their homes and business establishments from 8.30pm to 9.30pm as part of awareness drive on climate change.
The event began March 31, 2007 in Sydney (Australia) when 2.2 million individuals turned off their lights for an hour to take a stand against climate change.
Volunteers would conduct a cycle rally from Info City to Old Town to interact with citizens to make them aware of issues like rise in temperature and impact of global warming, said convener of Local Governance Network NGO Piyush Rout.
Bhubaneswar began organising the event since 2007 by switching off lights of homes, government buildings, monuments and businesses houses, added Piyush.
A walkathon is being planned with volunteers carrying solar lanterns as part of the awareness drive in association with Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, said Renewable Energy Booster Magazine publisher Chandrasekhar Mishra.
