Ease of doing business: Bad feedback led to rank fall, says govt

Bhubaneswar: A day after the state was ranked 14th in ease of doing business reforms, the state government Wednesday said unsatisfactory feedback from industries led to a further slide in the ranking.
The World Bank and the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) put Odisha at the 14th place in annual business ranking of states and Union Territories. The state was on 7th position in 2013-14 and declined to 11th in 2015-16. While Andhra Pradesh topped the list this year, Telangana and Haryana are at the second and third position respectively.
Commenting on the ranking, industries secretary Sanjeev Chopra said, ““Our compliance percentage in 2016 was 92. This year the compliance percentage to the points which the government of India has given is 97.8. So we have done exceedingly well in terms of compliance.”
However, the Centre has added another component called feedback this year. So the feedback which was taken from the industries, both large and MSMEs, that was not satisfactory as it seems. As a result, the rank has slipped, he pointed out.
“It surely means that the reforms undertaken by us and the feedback given by industries are not up to the mark. So that leaves us a lot of work to do. We’re working on that. We’re trying to see where the feedback is not up to the mark. We’ll improve on that,” Chopra stated.
