Berhampur: An elderly man was killed after a portion of his dilapidated house caved in on him while he was asleep late Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Kora Gouda of Pudamari village under Sanakhemundi block in Ganjam district.
Hailing from a poor family, Gouda could not afford to build a pucca house. Despite repeated pleas to the authorities for a house under various government housing schemes, Gouda’s family had been deprived of a house.
Left with no option, the family was taking shelter under a Kuchha house, made of bamboo, stones and muddy wall with a roof made of tiles and paddy straw. The walls of the house had grown weak due to the prevailing rain.
All of a sudden, a portion of the house wall collapsed Friday night while the family was asleep. Hearing the noise, everyone tried to escape. However, the elderly man was trapped after a wall collapsed on him while he was about to get out of the house.
After much effort, family members with the help of fellow villagers rushed Gouda to Digapahandi Community Health Centre (CHC) in a critical condition. However, he succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment.
