Khallikote, June 3: With the growing incidents of man-animal war taking place in different parts of the state, two aged persons were killed in two different places by elephants and another man critically injured on being attacked by a bear Wednesday.
While a woman was killed at Khallikote, a man was smashed to death at Chhendipada by tusker. The third incident of a wild bear attacking a man also happened at Chhendipada.
In the first incident, Saibani Gouda, a 60-year old woman suffered a tragic end when a herd of eight-elephants trampled her at Paladhuapali village under the block in Ganjam district Wednesday. Saibani along with other women of the village had gone to a pond to take bath, when the elephant herd suddenly appeared under a banyan tree near the pond. The tuskers chased the women. While all the women fled the scene, Saibani’s luck ran out as she fell down. The elephants, subsequently, trampled her. She sustained fractures and grievous injuries in her chest, hand and other organs.
As the news spread, the villagers rushed to the spot and drove the animals away using fire crackers. They rushed Saibani to the Khallikote health centre, where the doctors declared her brought dead. After a complaint was lodged with Khallikote police, the body was sent to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Berhampur for postmortem. Later, a team of forest officials led by forester Girish Chandra Ray drove away the animals from the area. The herd is now in Karakhol jungle. The forester said after a probe on the issue is over, family of the deceased will be provided with compensation.
Another report says an elderly man was killed in elephant attack in Brahmanbila village under Chhendipada police limits in Angul Wednesday. The incident occurred when Pitambar Pradhan (60), a farmer, had gone to Baghuapal, about one km from his village, to plough his paddy field in early morning. He came face to face with a tusker which had strayed into the area. The tusker lifted Pitambar through its tusk and trampled him under its feet. Panicked his bullocks ran home with the plough. Later family members accompanied by the village guard rescued the body. Forest and police officials reached the spot and conducted an inquiry. The police handed over the body to his family members after completing a post-mortem. Ranger Sudhanshu Sekhar Panda announced to provide Rs 3 lakh compensation to the bereaved family.
