Eunuch adopts orphan, keen to make her doc

Jeypore: In a rare instance, a eunuch has turned a role model for others by adopting an orphaned minor girl at Jeypore in Koraput district. The eunuch wants to groom the child into a doctor.

Four-year old Sonali Muduli was lodged at a relative’s house at Purunagada in Jeypore town after she lost her parents. However, her innocent eyes reflected that she was pining for care and love of parents. This grasped the attention of eunuch Maya alias Kailash Kasla during his visit to the house.

Maya liked the girl and adopted her. Instances of adoptions by childless couples are dime a dozen, but a eunuch adopting a child is rare, said locals.

According to reports, Sashi Muduli and her husband Krushna Muduli, relatives of Sonali, were to bring her up after her parents died. The poor couple leads a miserable life and ekes out a living by doing sundry jobs. It was difficult for them to raise the child when they were unable to arrange two square meals for themselves every day.

Maya is associated with an NGO, that works for rights of third gender and their legal awareness. By a chance, Maya was in another colleague’s house in Purunagad and saw Sonali alone at a neighbour’s house while the couple was away for work.

Sonali developed a liking for Maya and stayed at the latter’s house sometimes.

Maya, who has completed Plus-II Science, talked to Sonali’s relatives and adopted her January 10. The eunuch also threw a community feast as a mark of celebration.

Maya registered the adoption recently and nurtures a dream to make the child a doctor.

Lawyer Shubhrakanti observed that as per a Supreme Court ruling, there is no problem for a eunuch to adopt a child.
