Sonepur/Binika: A 42-year-old farmer from Choukamal village under Lachhipur police limits in Subarnapur district died late Monday night after allegedly consuming pesticide, police said Tuesday.
The deceased, identified as Surendra Biswal, cultivated paddy during the ongoing kharif season.
According to police, it is unclear whether the act was triggered by mental distress or family disputes. Surendra was one of three sons of Chakaman Biswal, who owns about 4.5 acres of farmland. Due to their father’s old age, the siblings managed the land together.
Police said Surendra had a dispute with his elder brother, Jogindra, over division of ancestral property. The three visited the police station Sunday, where IIC Bhojaraj Sahu mediated an amicable settlement. All three signed a written statement confirming the dispute had been resolved.
However, family members said Surendra consumed pesticide Monday after returning from the police station and died while undergoing treatment at VIMSAR, Burla.
