Fifth minor delivery in one week

Kendrapara: Amid hue and cry over the incident of a Class-VIII girl student delivering a baby in Kandhamal district, another minor girl has reportedly given birth to a baby in Patkura area of Kendrapara district.
Sources said the girl, a Class-X student, complained of labour pain Sunday evening and was admitted to Patkura community health centre here in the district where she delivered a baby boy Monday morning.
A preliminary probe revealed that the girl had a relationship with a boy of the locality. Police have started an investigation into the incident.
This makes it the fifth such case of delivery by minors in the last one week. The Kandhamal shocker that happened January 13 was followed by three more incidents of rape and pregnancy in one day from Jajpur, Kalahandi and Dhenkanal districts, January 18. In Jajpur district, a 14-year-old, raped and impregnated by Pintu Jena, a contractor with railways, delivered a baby January 18. Jena had engaged the victim to fetch drinking water for him for Rs 1,000 per month and used to rape her, reports said.

Similarly, headmaster of a residential school in Sadar block of Dhenkanal district, lodged a complaint at Sadar police station alleging that a Class-VIII girl of the school was found pregnant.

In Kalahandi district, a Class-VIII girl of a residential school in Narla area took abortion pills after being pregnant for eight weeks. After her condition worsened, she was admitted to the district headquarters hospital from where she was later shifted to VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR).
