Rourkela: Acting on a tip-off, a special squad of police arrested the absconding chief security officer (CSO) Balaram Champatiray of National Institute of Technology (NIT) here on the charge of sexually harassing women security guards Saturday night.
Champatiray was nabbed when he was walking towards his in-laws’ house at Jagda from Shaktinagar Square here at 9 pm.
The news of his arrest spread cheers among students and members of various political and social outfits who were on an agitation demanding action against him.
NIT director Sunil Sarangi had lodged a complaint in this regard in Sector-3 police station. Later, cases were registered based on the complaints of women security guards and over seizure of 37 IMFL liquor bottles from his office.
Champatiray was taken into custody and produced in the court of sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM) here Sunday evening. He was remand in 14-day jail custody. He will be again produced in the court in two separate cases Monday.
A special squad of police led by DSP PK Mishra had raided various places to trace Champatiray. They were keeping a watch on his movement by tracking his mobile phones. He was found to be hiding at three places in Cuttack. He had applied for anticipatory bail in the high court June 7 which was turned down June 10.
After failing to get anticipatory bail, he was planning to flee out of the state by booking flight ticket. But subsequently, he cancelled the ticket.
Police traced him in Cuttack after the money deducted after cancelation of the ticket was credited to his bank account. He had even booked a train ticket after he realised that the police were on his lookout.
Left with no option, he returned in his relative’s car to the Steel City and was walking towards his in-laws’ house when the police raided the place and arrested him. PNN
