Bhubaneswar: A major fire Tuesday broke out at the captive power plant (CPP) of National Aluminium Company Limited’s (NALCO) Angul unit, but was controlled immediately.
“There is no cause for panic. As the generator transformer was old one, the damage on account of the fire is marginal,” Nalco’s executive director (Smelter & Power), said in a statement.
The fire broke out in the old generator transformer of Unit-8 of captive power plant (CPP) of Nalco, Angul at around 1.15 pm due to internal short circuit problem, the statement said adding, the inferno was controlled immediately by the fire extinguishing team.
“The fire fighting team under the leadership of the executive director (Smelter & Power), did not allowed it to spread to adjoining areas and machinery,” the statement said.
The power situation was normalised immediately by starting the stand-by unit and there had been no injury to any person, it added.
Regarding the impact on the production of Nalco, an official claimed there was no production loss on account of the fire.
About 8 to 10 fire engines of NALCO’s own fire fighting service were pressed into service to tame the blaze. PTI
