Puri, Sept 13: Fishermen caught a cobia while they were fishing at Baliapanda beach here Tuesday.
The fish is black in colour and is about 500 cm long. According to Rita Jayshankar of the regional office of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), “This is a cobia and its biological name is Rochycentroncandadum. These kinds of fish species are seen across the continents barring the east Pacific Ocean region. The fish can grow up to 2 metres and weigh up to 78 kg.”
The fish is mostly found in areas where mangrove forests and corals exist, said Jayshankar, adding the species grow very fast.
“The fish, which mainly eats small fishes and crabs, is edible and tasty too. The CMFRI also cultivates fishes in its Mandapam,” she added.
