Bhubaneswar, Oct 20: The Health department has been contemplating to launch an online registration process for food vendors to keep track of the quality of food available to the people right from the eateries in the streets to the food served in big hotels.
“The online registration process will help simplify our work of tracking scores of street vendors and ensure supply of quality food at their end to the consumers. Observers will be appointed in the districts and later in the blocks to help complete the process,” said food safety commissioner Babaji Charan Das.
Under the proposed system, street vendors will register themselves on the portal which will be monitored by food inspectors. However, big hotel proprietors will register themselves on the same portal that will facilitate their licensing process. The hotels can seek renewal of licences online annually.
Das told Orissa POST the portal will most probably be constructed by the end of November.
“National Institute of Smart Government will design the portal. We have already sent the proposal to the government and the portal will probably start functioning by November-end,” he said.
Meanwhile, vendors who are unaware of such a process or are unable to operate online, will be assisted by food security observers and their team will organise awareness activities. Vendor registration will be done at block and district-level offices.
Health department sources said the process has been in operation in a number of states and Orissa will emulate their path.
The online management system has been adopted successfully by the State Pollution Control Board under the “Online Consent System”.
