Malkangiri, Jan 19: The failure of government agencies to keep promises made to ultras to persuade them into giving up arms and joining the mainstream has resulted in some people having to struggle to maintain their families.
One such person is Parvati Majhi of Malkangiri. Parvati, who was involved in several violence incidents like attack on police at Sudhakonda and a plant at Damanjodi, had surrendered before police in 2012 in the hope that she would be given assistance to live a normal life. The officials of the police department had promised to provide financial assistance according to the provisions of the government. Parvati was also assured that steps would be taken to rehabilitate her. However, her hopes have been dashed as the administration forgot to fulfill its promise. She is now struggling to maintain her family.
Parvati had gone to her village Kapatuti after giving up arms before police. However, ultras assaulted her and her family members and asked her to leave the village. They even threatened to kill her if she did not follow their diktat.
Out of fear of attack, Parvati, her father Sanyasi Majhi, mother Vaidya Majhi and sisters Sumitra and Samari had left the village and come to MV-3 village in Malkangiri district headquarters. Since then, she and her family members have been staying there in a rented house.
However, she is facing great difficulty in maintaining her family as she has very little income. Parvati is working as a daily labourer but is unable to afford a day’s food. Besides, her family members have lost their sources of income on leaving their village. Parvati had approached the officials concerned several time and sought their intervention but this did not yield fruit. Monday, Parvati lodged a complaint with collector Prashant Kumar Reddy and urged him to address her concerns. Reddy assured her of rehabilitation.
