Bhubaneswar: A fresh low-pressure area is expected to develop over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal around August 18, and under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is very likely in several districts of Odisha August 18 and 19, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Saturday.
“Due to the formation of a low-pressure area, there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, in various districts of Odisha between August 18 and 19,” the regional centre of the IMD said.
The existing low-pressure system over south Odisha and adjoining north Andhra Pradesh has now moved to south Chhattisgarh and its neighbourhood.
The associated upper-air cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6km above mean sea level and tilts southwestwards with height, it said.
It is expected to move west-northwestwards, gradually weaken, and reach Gujarat around the morning of August 18 as a remnant cyclonic circulation, the weatherman said.
The IMD has already issued yellow and orange alerts for many districts in Odisha for the five days beginning Saturday.
The sea condition is expected to remain rough to very rough along and off the south Odisha coast, the west-central Bay, and the northwest Bay of Bengal between August 18.
