Gamblers jump into river to evade arrest, 1 drowns

Malkangiri: A man drowned after he along with four of his aides jumped into a river to evade police arrest following a sudden raid during a gambling session Friday. The fire services personnel were pressed into service to rescue the man Friday night, however, they recovered the body from the water Saturday morning.

The incident has been reported from Balimela area in Malkangiri district. The deceased has been identified as Binod Chemudu (30).

The body has been sent for autopsy to ascertain the reason of death.

According to sources, local cops conducted a raid on a gambling den in Balimela after receiving reliable inputs about the illegal activity. However, spotting the raiding party approaching them, four of the accused ran from the spot and later jumped into the river to evade arrest.

While four of them jumped into the Chitapari river to give a slip to the chasing cops, only three managed to escape.
