Gangrape victim dies in hospital, 2 held

Koraput: After battling for life for nearly 15 days, a gangrape victim died while undergoing treatment at the Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital (SLNMCH) here Thursday.

The 32-year-old married woman of Siadimala village in Jeypore block of Koraput district was allegedly gangraped by two youths of the village December 5.

The woman was initially admitted to the Koraput District Headquarters Hospital in Jeypore in a critical condition, and was later shifted to the SLNMCH when her condition deteriorated.

The husband and mother-in-law of the deceased had lodged a complaint at the Jeypore Sadar police station and the police had arrested the two alleged rapists, Kamal Lochan Dandasena (35) and Ramesh Dandasena (19).

Tension gripped the hospital as villagers accused the hospital administration of negligence in treating the woman. The villagers also demanded compensation for the victim’s family.

The woman’s husband is suffering from a mental illness and her mother-in-law is visually-impaired. She has a four-year-old son and a daughter aged six.

IIC Kailash Chandra Sethi said both the accused have been sent to jail and investigations are underway.
