New Delhi: Former Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, GC Murmu is all set to take over as India’s new auditor general. GC Murmu had resigned Wednesday from his post of Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. The government of India had appointed Manoj Sinha as his successor.
The post of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) would in all probability become vacant this week. This would have happened as incumbent Rajiv Mehrishi would have turned 65 and would have retired. The post of CAG is a constitutional post and cannot be left vacant.
“Rajiv Mehrishi is turning 65 August 8. That is why the government is in a hurry to look for a replacement,” a senior official of the finance ministry had said Thursday.
A highly influential post, former Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai had authored a report that triggered the 2G telecoms spectrum scandal.
Murmu’s resignation came days after a controversy over media reports regarding the elections in J&K. He had been quoted as saying that elections in the Union Territory (UT) can only be held after the ongoing delimitation exercise. Elections have not been held in Jammu and Kashmir in the two years since the elected government collapsed, with the poll body citing security concerns.
