Bolangir, April 13: A girl who was admitted in a critical condition in Bolangir district headquarters hospital (DHH) was left to writhe with pain on the hospital floor for 11 hours before she was shifted to the VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla at 9 pm Sunday.
The girl, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, was rescued by Government Railway Police (GRP) of Titilagarh and initially admitted in a hospital of Titilagarh town as she had sustained head injuries and her condition was critical. She was shifted to Bolangir DHH Saturday night.
A surgeon, Pradipta Mohapatra, examined her Sunday morning and referred her to VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla as her condition was very critical around 10 am. However, the hospital authorities did not take any step to shift her despite knowing that there was no one to take care of her.
The girl, who kept falling down while writhing in pain, was put on the floor where she lay for several hours until a person informed the authorities of a social organisation ‘Swadhar’ about her condition. The president of the organization, Ucchatananda Mahakura, and his colleagues then came to the hospital and took care of the girl.
A member of child welfare committee, Balakrushna Sarangi, apprised the chief district medical officer (CDMO) about the matter at 3 pm and sought his intervention for shifting the girl to the Burla hospital. However, this also did not yield any result. Even, the district child protection unit and child welfare committee authorities also did not make any arrangement for shifting her to Burla.
The girl was finally taken to Burla by a 108 ambulance at 9 pm after some mediapersons informed the collector, Ashok Kumar Nayak, about her condition and asked him to ensure proper treatment for the girl. The incident has raised serious questions about the manner in which Bolangir DHH authorities are treating such patients.
CDMO Rabinarayan Tripathy, however, refuted the claim that the girl was not provided
treatment.
