Bhubaneswar: The state government Monday placed under suspension Prof Laxmidhar Das, head of the department of anaesthesia at SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMH), who was arrested last week on charge of sexual harassment of a female student of the college.
“Prof Das was placed under suspension following the recommendation of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to that effect,” said a source in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
After the first-year postgraduate student lodged formal complaint with police, Prof Das was arrested February 26 and charged under Sections 354 (A) (sexual harassment) and 354 D (stalking) besides provisions of the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
He was sent to jail the same day after his bail plea was rejected by a court in Cuttack.
The complainant, who hails from Pondicherry, had alleged that Prof Das had called her to the department February 2 and molested her.
She had also alleged in her complaint to the police that the professor had been making sexual advances at her since September last. PNN
