Kendrapara: Sanjay Biswal a.k.a. Babu (32) was nabbed after an encounter on Rajnagar-Gupti road in this district under the wee hours of Tuesday.
The hardcore criminal received two bullets on the left thigh and one below the left knee. After the encounter he was rushed to Rajnagar community health center (CHC) and then to Kendrapara district headquarters hospital (DHH). Later he was moved to SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Police seized a single shot pistol, a bullet shell and a stripped Glamour bike from his possession. He has more than 10 cases of murder, extortion and theft pending against him at different police stations within Kendrapara and Bhadrak districts, informed Pattamundai SDPO Ranjan Kumar Dey.
Monday morning there was a brawl between two groups over prawn enclosures. In this fight, Kishore Sethy, son of Kalandi Sethy of Kandira village was shot dead. Villagers nabbed Sipun Swain, a member of Sapa Gang, led by Sanjay, and he was handed over to the Police, informed Dey.
In this connection, following the directives of superintendent of police (SP) Niti Shekhar, ASI P K Kanungo, Rajnagar IIC Sukant Patra, teams of Rajkanika and Aul raided several possible hideouts of Sanjay.
Thereafter the district police acting on a tip off that Sanjay was coming from Gupti towards Kendrapara laid a trap at Kurunti.
Unaware of the web laid by the coppers, Sanjay came into the scene and immediately opened fire at the police attempting hard to abate the trap, an exchange of fire followed and after a fiery struggle Sanjay was nabbed, Dey informed.
