Cuttack, Jan 25: Upholding the earlier verdict of a family court, the High Court has directed a man to pay Rs 3 lakh alimony to his estranged wife.
A bench of Justices V Prasad and SK Sahu rejected the petition of Ajit Kumar Basak and ordered him to pay the alimony.
According to case details, Basak, a native of Bhuban in Dhenkanal, had registered his marriage with Sucharita Nayak of Khannagar at the Cuttack marriage registrar’s office. The bride’s family had given Rs 1 lakh in cash, gold and silver ornaments and other household materials to the groom’s family during the marriage.
The couple was residing at a rented accommodation in Khannagar. A few months into the marriage, Ajit’s family members started demanding more dowry from Sucharita. Ajit soon deserted his wife and went to live with his parents in Bhuban.
When the woman along with her parents went to Ajit’s home, his family not only assaulted her but forced her leave the house. She later registered a case with the family court.
The family court in January 31, 2013 had directed Ajit to pay Rs 3 lakh within three months towards maintenance of his estranged wife. However, Ajit moved the HC challenging the ruling.
