Keonjhar: Health and sanitation system in this town seem to be crumbling as heaps of garbage have been piling up across the town for days together.
With trash not being lifted regularly, the situation at daily market, Dhangarpada, Ghutur Road stretch, Judia Ghati and near Bank of India at Gandhi Chhak is reportedly going from bad to worse. Chocked drains make the picture complete. Even after a little shower, drain water starts flowing on the road, carrying the garbage along with it.
The wastage from non-vegetarian counters in the municipality market at Gandhi Chhak is also not lifted regularly. As a result, the flow of rain water carries the waste along with it, leaving the entire area stinking.
Not only the wastage, stagnated water at different places turns them into breeding grounds for mosquitoes and flies. As regular fogging is not carried out, or limited to only some areas, the mosquito menace has made people’s lives miserable in some areas.
Local social activist Mansoor Alam attributes the miserable situation in the town to the municipality. He alleges the civic body is not taking action against the shopkeepers and businessmen who are largely responsible for making the town dirty.
At a time when the government has put the state on alert for dengue, the district administration’s apathetic attitude towards lifting garbage and taking steps to contain the spread of mosquitoes has left the people distraught.
