Aska: The local police arrested a notorious history-sheeter during an encounter on Golapalli-Babanpur road near Aska College Square in Ganjam district in the wee hours of Tuesday.
G Bulu Patra of Golapalli village collapsed after a bullet pierced his right leg. His accomplice Basant Lenka, however, managed to escape.
Bulu was first admitted to Aska Government Hospital where doctors administered him primary treatment.
He was subsequently shifted to Berhampur based-MKCG Medical College and Hospital as the bullet remained stuck in his leg. A country-made pistol, three live bullets, two mobile phones and a motorcycle were seized from the spot. A case was registered and a manhunt has been launched to nab Bulu’s absconding accomplice, Aska IIC Baleshwar Gidhi said.
Bulu, who entered the world of crime in 2003, has eight cases including murder, dacoity and burglary against his name in Aska, Hinjilicut, Kabisuryanagar and Buguda police stations in the district, the police said.
In October 2015, he raided a jewellery store in Balipadar under Buguda police limits and decamped with huge stocks of gold ornaments. He was absconding since then and had figured in the most-wanted list of the police.
The encounter took place after intelligence inputs warned of his presence at his village. A police team immediately cordoned off the village and asked him to surrender when he tried to escape riding the motorcycle of his accomplice.
He fired three rounds at the police and was speeding away near an orchard when the police retaliated and rendered him critical. Police nabbed him as soon as he fell off the motorbike.
According to reports, this is the third encounter by Aska police in the last eight months. Earlier, the police had arrested two other history-sheeters – Bulu Nayak and Chakanayan Nahak – during similar encounters. PNN
