Jeypore: In a bizarre incident, a tribal student was forced to eat the liver of a dog as medicine after he was bitten by the animal.
According to sources, it was the school headmaster who advised the student to eat the liver of the dog which bit him. The matter came to light after some villagers informed the Block Education Officer (BEO) of the incident who then ordered an inquiry.
The Class IX student has been identified as Chandra Nayak who hails from Kashipur block of Rayagada district. He has been residing in Toyaput Netaji School hostel under Laxmipur block of Koraput district.
A rabid dog is reported to have bitten Nayak while he was playing with his friends on the school corridor. The boy then informed the headmaster-cum-hostel in charge Pravakar Gorada who then advised him to eat the liver of the dog to ward off effect of rabies.
The innocent boy along with other hostel inmates caught the dog, killed it and handed the carcass over to hostel cook Rajiv Himmirika.
Rajiv allegedly cooked the dog’s liver and served Nayak on the direction of the headmaster, it is learnt. Later, Nayak fell sick and was admitted to Laxmipur Community Health Centre. Currently, Nayak’s condition is stated to be stable.
On receipt of information, the BEO started an inquiry into the incident.
Meanwhile, the headmaster claimed that eating liver of rabid dog is a common practice among the tribals of the district.
