Bhubaneswar: Hockey Odisha scraped past Hockey Haryana 2-1 while Hockey Gangpur played out a six-goal draw against Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy in different matches of the VIIIth Junior Women’s National Hockey Championship (Division A) at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, Sunday.
In the first match, Haryana took the lead early in the sixth minute with a brilliant field goal from Usha. Their joy was shortlived as Nimabati Singh restored parity for Odisha ten minutes later. It was Abinasi Mukti Surin’s goal just one minute from the final hooter that sealed the win for Odisha.
In the other Pool A encounter, Gangpur twice conceded the lead to draw 3-3 with Madhya Pradesh. MP took the lead in the sixth minute before Janhabi Pradhan leveled the score for Gangpur 11 minutes later. Janhabi made it 2-1 in the 23rd minute. However, Gangpur couldn’t hold onto the lead as Savita made the scoreline 2-2 five minutes later.
Jiwan Kishori Toppo made it 3-2 in the 60th minute for Gangpur. However Yogita Verma equalised for MP six minutes later to dash all hopes for the Odisha based side.
Debi emerges champ
Devi Nayak of KV-IV, Bhubaneswar emerged champion of the IVth State Schools’ Open Chess Championship, which concluded here Sunday. He clinched the title with six points. Tanmay Kumar of Stewart School secured the second position while Dibyasingh Ray of DPS Kalinga finished third.
