Bhubaneswar: The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA) conducted a fish harvest fair recently. According to ICAR-CIFA sources, the primary objective of organising the event was to spread public awareness about the activities of the institution and apprise people about the health benefits associated with regular fish consumption. The event drew significant interest as more than 400 visitors thronged the fair to purchase live fish harvested from the ponds of the institute farm. Eleven varieties of live fish were displayed and sold to the public, ensuring maximum freshness and quality. The fish were made available at subsidised prices fixed by ICAR-CIFA.
Additionally, the event highlighted ICAR-CIFA’s advanced fish production technologies, especially in the area of diversified aquaculture. Visitors expressed their satisfaction and appreciated the efforts of ICAR-CIFA. Earlier, ICAR-CIFA also hosted nearly 1,000 school students from over 20 schools across Bhubaneswar, Puri and nearby regions with the objective of familiarising school students with the world of freshwater aquaculture and its significance in ensuring food security, generating livelihoods, and promoting environmental sustainability.
Students took part in the event in well-organised batches throughout the day, following a structured itinerary that featured a live fish harvest demonstration, screening of aquaculture documentaries, an extensive exhibition of fish species, a drone demonstration, and a variety of engaging learning activities. The exhibition included 25 aquariums highlighting the rich biodiversity of freshwater fish.
