Berhampur, July 9: Illegal structures on the premises of the MKCG Medical College and Hospital were razed Thursday. A number of people have erected unauthorized shops and several others are staying on its premises by setting up temporary houses.
Several attempts have been made to free the encroached land. However, no concrete step was taken. The issue was also raised in the MKCG Swasthya Vikash Samiti meeting. After a decision was taken by the district administration in this regard, the illegal shops and shanties were flattened in police presence.
A direction in this regard was taken by Ganjam district collector Premchandra Choudhury. Berhampur sub-collector Nikhil Pawan Kalyan supervised the process during the anti-encroachment drive. Out of the 54 illegal shops on the MKCG premises, 32 were flattened in the first phase. Twenty houses adjacent to the hospital blood bank were also destroyed. Betel shops, tea stalls and other make-shift stalls on both sides of the hospital road were razed. Other structures on the encroached land will be destroyed after a few days, said the district administration sources.
Among others, Berhampur superintendent of police Sarthak Sarangi, tehsildar Rashmiranjan Nayak, assistant district collector Umesh Chandra Khatei and MKCG administrative officer Jyotirmaryee Pradhan were present during the drive.
