Bhubaneswar: India Meteorological Department (IMD) Saturday said a fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha–West Bengal coasts, around August 25.
The existing low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and its neighbourhood continues to persist. Under its influence, Odisha is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning between August 23 and August 27. The IMD has also issued a Yellow Warning for several districts, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms with lightning, and gusty surface winds reaching 30–40 kmph through August 27.
According to the IMD, the associated upper-air cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestward with height. It is expected to move west-northwestward across Jharkhand in the next 24 hours before gradually weakening.
The monsoon trough at mean sea level currently passes through Ganganagar, Gwalior, Banda, Dehri, the centre of the low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal, and then extends east-southeastward to the northeast Bay of Bengal.
Due to its impact, squally weather with wind speeds reaching 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, is likely to prevail over the North Bay of Bengal and along and off the Odisha coast August 23 and 24.
Sea conditions are expected to remain moderate to rough during this period, and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast and over the North Bay of Bengal for the next two days.
