Bhubaneswar: Cricket became a celebration of inclusion on Independence Day as young adults with autism stepped onto the field for the Independence Cup, organised by Zain Foundation Trust, getting an opportunity to play the sport they love in an organised match alongside their fathers, caregivers and support staff.
The rain gods relented on the day, allowing the match to go ahead with two teams—Jai Hind and Vande Mataram. Each team had five young adults with autism, while the remaining players comprised fathers of the participating young adults and staff members of Detour Odisha and Zain Foundation Trust.
The five-over match was specially structured keeping in mind the fatigue levels of the young adults with autism. Nineteen-year-old Samyak Nayak was adjudged Man of the Match after hitting three sixes, emerging as one of the standout performers of the day.
Each young adult with autism was paired with a neurotypical player who assisted them in understanding the rules and flow of the game, while ensuring that the essence of cricket remained intact.
The most rewarding moment came when every young player demonstrated an understanding of the basic bat-and-ball action and attempted to hit the ball. Their enthusiasm turned the match into an emotional and memorable experience for the parents watching from the sidelines.
“It was our way of telling them, ‘They Can’,” said Gargi Bhattacharya of Zain Foundation Trust, highlighting the larger purpose behind the initiative.
Trophies were presented to every participating player in recognition of their participation and effort. The emphasis was not merely on winning, but on ensuring that every young adult felt valued, included and celebrated.
For the parents, seeing their children take part in a cricket match on a proper ground was a moment of immense pride and joy. The event gave the young adults the freedom to enjoy cricket and experience the excitement of being part of a team—just like everyone else.

The Independence Cup was conceived as more than a sporting event. It was an exercise in inclusion and awareness, aimed at creating greater understanding among the neurotypical community about the abilities and aspirations of young adults with autism.

The Independence Cup, therefore, became a celebration of more than Independence Day. It celebrated the freedom to participate, the freedom to enjoy cricket and the freedom to belong.
