Bhubaneswar, Dec 6: Innovative working and dummy projects spanning 25 branches of science were on display at a science exhibition organized at Buxi Jagabandhu English Medium School (BJEM) where around 1,800 students exhibited their skills.

Titled ‘Sciscape’, the grand science show was held with a view to cultivate scientific temper among students. Exhibits that were displayed spanned varied fields such as computer science, mathematics, biology, and practical everyday science.

Keshari Divya Jyoti Mohanty and Swavimaan Mallick who made a project on ‘Homemade extraction of your own DNA’ said, “It was difficult to display the existence of DNA in the human body through the naked eye, so we prepared a small experiment through which we can notice the existence of DNA. For the experiment, all we required was transparent glass, salt, liquid soap, alcohol and fruit juice.”

One of them was a model of an Electrostatic Smoke Precipitator made by Jaydev Rout, a Class VI student. The model consisted of a battery connected to a chimney-shaped tube. When fire is lit to a wire at one end, the smoke enters the tube and later precipitates.

“This is a very important and useful model to reduce smoke emissions from factories. It will help reduce pollution in the atmosphere. I want more people to be aware of such a method,” said Rout.

Among the other models on display were a hydraulic brake system based on Pascal’s Law and a model demonstrating generation of lava. There was also a work experience exhibition which saw many students making useful items from waste at home.

To encourage the students, eminent personalities including director of AIIMS Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, and secretary of selection board Dhirendra Kumar Mohapatra were present at the event.

Eminent scientist and senior professor of Institute of Physics Durga Prasad Mohapatra explained the necessity and significance of science exhibitions in educational institutions and how such exhibitions inspire meritorious students to come up with innovative ideas. Mohapatra also advised the young minds to work for peaceful mobilisation of science in the interest of mankind.

Principal of BJEM School JK Mohanty encouraged students to link their spirit of inquiry with the laboratories of life outside.

“The teacher’s duty is to pick up the workable ideas and help the students design them. This science show will give students an opportunity to reason, think, experiment, analyse and explore. I am sure students of this school will go miles ahead in their quest for innovation. It is the role of teachers to inculcate in their students skills to question, reason and think beyond their textbooks,” Mohanty said.
