Baripada: A virtual cold war, which had commenced between two factions of Biju Chhatra Janata Dal in the district a year ago, took an ugly turn Monday.
When people were celebrating the New Year Eve Monday, a bunch of youths stormed into the Biju Bhawan here and vandalised assets there. Some furniture and stationery were allegedly looted.
Stones were pelted at the residence of Zilla Biju Yuba Janata Dal president Jintendra Mohanty. A car parked at the house of Baripada IIC was also vandalised.
Police have registered cases following complaints from the two sides.
Police arrested two student leaders – Zilla Biju Yuba Janata Dal general secretary Debajit Patnaik and Chinmay Kumar Das – while searches were on to nab others involved in the case.
Meanwhile, district Biju Chhatra Janata Dal general secretary Abhay Singh has suspended Debajit Patnaik for his ‘’rash action.’’
According to reports, the cold war had been raging between two factions – one led by Bebajit Patnaik and the other by Jitendra Mohanty.
Both the groups have been indulging in internecine feuds. Days ago, the two groups clashed near Lulung when the supporters of both the sides were doing picnic there.
Bebajit Patnaik’s supporters Chinmay Das, Amit Parida, Tapas Dharmohapatra and others allegedly broke open the party office and assaulted guard Akshay Nayak Mondaay evening. They also ransacked the office. It is alleged, they took away a TV set and cash of Rs 20,500.
Later, they went to the house of Zilla Biju Yuba Janata Dal president and threw stones at it. They also pelted stones at a car parked near the IIC house.
The two arrested student leaders were produced in court while others are absconding.
Police have intensified raids to nab the accused, said IIC Ashok Kumar Nayak.
