Bhubaneswar, August 9: The city today celebrated the historic 75th anniversary of Quit India Movement or August Kranti Diwas with a great spirit reminiscing some of the great freedom fighters responsible for the freedom of India. Sambhavana trust today organised a program to commemorate this occasion in the premises of Soochana Bhawan here, Wednesday On this day in 1942 Mahatma Gandhi and the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) launched the historic Quit India Movement or Bharat Chodo Andolan at the Bombay session. As the Quit India Movement was launched in August, it is also known as August Movement or August Kranti. This was a civil disobedience movement initiated to end British rule in India. Gandhi called for the attention of the nation asking to ‘Do or Die’ in his speech. The movement was started in August 9, 1942 after the British responded by arresting all the major leaders including Mahatma Gandhi. Since then the day has been celebrated by paying tribute to freedom fighters and martyrs who have been responsible for the freedom of our country. On the occasion, the eminent musicians of the state Sourav Nayak, Gaurav Giri, Sweta Mishra, Sarthak Mohapatra, Siddhanta Satpathy, Lipsa Mishra and others sang songs as a tribute to the historic struggle.
The program was attended by Minister Pratap Jena, former minister Braja Kishore Tripathy, Biswa Bushan Harichandan, Sheikh Matlub Ali, MLA Bhubaneswar (North) and Priyadarshi Mishra. Freedom fighter and former MLA Bhabani Charan Patnaik was felicitated at the event. Speaking on the occasion minister Jena said that “The nation should always and must remember their freedom fighters and heroes. The government has been responsible enough in doing its duty by providing benefits to our state
heroes including the family of the Paika rebellion members.” Several noted poets of the state also recited poetry in order to pay their tribute to the freedom fighters. The Culture department of Orissa also organised an event to commemorate this day. On the occasion two exhibitions were conducted on themes- “Involvement of Orissa in Kranti Divas” and “Newspapers role in Kranti Divas”. Apart from this, Students of city-based school BJEM took out a rally from their school to museum passing through BJB Nagar Chanting praises for the freedom fighters who took part in the Quit India Movement. Above 40 students including NCC cadets took part in that rally. As a part of the event, they also paid tribute to the late veteran freedom fighter of Orissa Buxi Jagabandhu Principal of the school Sandhya Jena spoke about the contributions made by freedom fighters for Quit India movement, which further lead the British to leave the country. However, Sandhya said that “India still lacks independence in some areas. We still find gender bias in our country. We are yet to uproot the corruption virus from our society and also people of many villages suffer like they have not received freedom yet.” Many government schools conducted competitions to create awareness among students concerning the day. “We conducted debate and essay competition on freedom fighters so that our children know about them” said S Kumar, teacher, Rasulgarh government school. The schools affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education celebrated this occasion with an objective to create a movement inclusive of all citizens in the country in realizing the vision of a New India. Some of the schools along with teachers took pledge to make India clean (Swachh), corruption free and caste free society in the next five years. Rishikesh Mallick, a Class-VII student said, “Of course, we are grateful for our freedom fighters who laid down their life to set India free. However, we need to bring certain changes with an aim to take India to a new level. We require quality education, employment and a country without corruption.”
