Bhubaneswar, June 30: Rains failed to be a dampener for the #NotInMyName anti-lynching campaign in city. Denizens took part in a silent protest at Master Canteen, Friday despite the pouring rain. Around 50 protestors shouted anti-lynching slogans, as they held placards with ‘Stop Mob lynching’ quotes. They stood up in arms against the recent lynching of a teenage Muslim boy by the vigilante cow protection groups. “I am very happy that despite heavy rain, people came forward for the noble cause. This shows that our people are very much concerned about anti-social activities happening these days. The protest is a message for all those who think we will accept the ideology advocated by certain goons or self-proclaimed saviours of culture,” said
Jitendra Kumar Biswal, who spearheaded the protest. Earlier, people in at least ten
cities across India took to streets, Wednesday to protest against the lynching of a 17-year-old boy,
Junaid. He was killed by a mob when he was on his way home to Ballabhgarh after shopping for
Eid in Delhi. The campaign #NotInMyName started with a Facebook post by a filmmaker to condemn the incident. The campaign is aimed at ‘reclaiming the constitution’ and ‘resisting the onslaught’ on the right to life. The campaign has gone viral over social media. An image designed by graphic artist Orijit Sen— featuring blood-stained slippers, a metal rod and the message “Not In My Name” is trending all over twitter and Facebook. The
protests are meant to condemn the alleged atrocities inflicted upon the Muslims and Dalits by radical elements in the society. “It has become a national issue now. It is not confined to any particular place. Every now and then, we hear of people being harassed or beaten in public for cattle smuggling. They don’t even bother to investigate the facts, before jumping to conclusions. It seems that people don’t fear law,” said one of the protestors in the city.
