Bhubaneswar: Cuttack-Choudwar MLA Pravat Ranjan Biswal, who was arrested by the CBI in a chit fund scam case, was Monday shifted to SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack for better treatment, officials said.
The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) legislator was admitted at the state-run Capital Hospital September 22, after he was arrested by the CBI for his alleged link with the multi-crore Seashore Group chit fund scam.
Biswal was shifted to SCB Medical College Hospital for better treatment on neurosurgery, Dr C R Das, director of Capital Hospital said.
He was admitted at the intensive care unit (ICU), in the Trauma Care unit of SCB Medical College Hospital, hospital sources said.
Biswal, who was taken on remand by the investigating agency September 20, was produced before the special CBI court two days later.
Following this, the court sent Biswal to jail. It had ordered the jail authorities to conduct a medical check-up of the legislator after his lawyer Anup Senapati informed the court that his client should be shifted to a hospital, due to his post-operative illness.
The investigating agency is probing alleged payment of Rs 25 lakh by Seashore Chairman-cum-Managing Director Prashant Dash to Biswal in two instalments as ‘protection money’, for allowing smooth operations of the company in his constituency, CBI sources had said.
Meanwhile, Biswal Monday moved the Khurda District and Sessions Court seeking bail. Earlier, the Special Court, designated as CBI Court, September 23, had rejected Biswal’s bail plea.
