Jhumpura New Year begins with elephant confrontation

Keonjhar: From the very beginning of the year, the people of Jhumpura are facing confrontation with elephants; as a herd of nine elephants including three calves sneaked into the market area Tuesday morning.

Hundreds of people rushed to see the wild animals. Avoiding any harm to the animals and the onlookers, the forest department had a harrowing time. As per the last report, the herd took refuge in the mango orchard near Jhumpura block office.

Panicked locals taking steps on their own to drive away the herd caused a lot of headache for the forest department officials as a mixed of crackers and gongs sound had an irritating impact on the animals.

The forest department sources said that the herd had sneaked into the market area from Balibandh section. Monday this herd had caused lot damage to crops and later forced their entry through the boundary wall of the block office.
