Cuttack: In the latest incident of elephant attack in the state, a woman was trampled to death by a wild tusker at Nuagarh village near Narasinghpur in this district Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Laxmi Jena (50), a resident of the same village.
Laxmi along with a group of women had gone to the Budha Budhi garden located near the village to pluck mangoes early in the morning.
Meanwhile, the women came across the pachyderm that had strayed into the mango orchard the previous night.
In a bid to save their lives, the women ran helter-skelter from the orchard. While, all others managed to escape, the jumbo caught hold of Laxmi with its trunk and trampled her.
Later, the animal strayed back into the forest. After getting information, the forest officials reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem.
The district administration has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 20,000 to the bereaved family.
In a similar incident, a tusker had trampled Binod Barad from Khairapanga village of Badamba block in the district to death a few days ago.
