Daringbadi: Vigilance sleuths Tuesday arrested Chitaranjan Baliarsingh, a junior engineer (JE) of Sraniketa panchayat under Daringbadi block in Kandhamal district on charge of accepting Rs 6,000 for passing a work bill.
Officials disguised in plain clothes seized chemical-laced notes worth Rs 6,000 from his possession. Simultaneous raids were conducted at his government quarters, residence and in-laws’ house, vigilance DSP Surendra Nath Panigrahy said.
According to sources, Naha Pradhan of Sraniketa had got contract to construct a community meeting hall in the panchayat. He approached Baliarsingh to release the remaining Rs 60,000. However, Baliarsingh demanded 12 per cent PC amounting to Rs 8,000 from Pradhan. After negotiation, the amount was fixed at Rs 6,000.
Later, Pradhan approached Berhampur vigilance and narrated his ordeal. As per Pradhan’s complaint, a case was registered and a plan was hatched to arrest Baliarsingh red-handed.
Then, Pradhan took chemical-laced notes of Rs 6,000 and handed it over to Baliarsingh at his residence. Meanwhile, vigilance officials disguised in formal clothes conducted a sudden raid and made the arrest. Further probe is on, DSP Panigrahy said. PNN
