Cuttack, June 4: Justice Dhirendra Hiralal Waghela, former chief justice of Karnataka high court, was sworn here in Thursday as Chief Justice of the Orissa high court.
Justice Waghela was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor SC Jamir at the swearing-in ceremony held at the high court premises in the presence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, director general of police (DGP) Sanjeeb Marik, senior judges and others. Justice Waghela replaced Justice Pradip Kumar Mohanty, who was the acting chief justice since March this year, after the elevation of Justice Amitava Roy as a judge in the Supreme Court. The Rashtrapati Bhwan announced Justice Waghela’s appointment in a notification April 13. He is scheduled to retire in August next year.
Born in August, 1954 at Rajkot in Gujarat, Justice Waghela began his legal practice in his hometown in November, 1975. He was elevated to the bench of Gujarat high court as an additional judge in September 1999 and became a permanent judge in May 2001. Later, he was appointed as the chief justice of Karnataka high court in March, 2013.
