Bhawanipatna: The Kalahandi Bar Association has given a bandh call for September 30 over its demand for setting up of a bench of High Court in the district.
This apart, the association has also decided that no lawyer would fight the case of the accused arrested in connection with a nursing student gang raped at a place under Junagarh police limits, informed association president Bhabendra Panda.
The association took the above two decisions at a general council meeting. The association has also demanded that the state government set up a fast-track to ensure speedy justice to the rape victim.
Terming the case wherein the nursing student being gang raped in a forested area near Jaring by some miscreants September 14 as heinous, association president Panda said it was unanimously decided that no advocate would fight the case on behalf of the accused.
The association also demanded that the state government provide a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the victim.
Among others, vice president Dillip Kumar Praharaj, secretary Ashwini Kumar Das, joint secretary Nihar Ranjan Mishra and others attended the meeting held Wednesday.
Notably, the police Wednesday arrested eight accused in connection with the gang rape case. They also confirmed the involvement of a minor in the case. Out of the eight, three were arrested for making the video viral. The accused involved in the gang rape have been identified as Amit Naik (30), Prakash Naik alias Luku (22), Shanta Naik (24), Labanya Chhatriya (21), Anirudha Chhatriya (20) and a minor of Baxitulashipali village under Junagarh police limits. And the three who were held under IT Act are Binod Naik alias Ghatu (32) and Swayambar Bag (30) of Baxitulashipali village under Junagarh police limits and Tikamani Podh (32) of Tentulipada village under Kokasara police limits.
All the accused are to be produced in a court Thursday.
